But Still She Smiles

She smiles
Handed a cup of happiness
Brings it to her lips
About to take a sip
It's stolen from her
Ripped from small hands
She cries out
Reaching for the cup
It becomes intangible, unreachable
Tears run down her flushed cheeks
She becomes angry, frustrated
Lashing out at her perpetrator
He lashes back, hard
Throwing glass words
They shatter
Shrapnel falls all around her
Slice her flesh
More words are thrown
They seep into her cuts
Infecting
She cries once more
From the pain
He smiles; content
She curls up
Diseased
She whimpers;
Slowly
Painfully
Dead inside

But still she smiles
